That's true but I would not assume that it needs replacing. Hardware,  
especially in the hands of the inexperienced, can appear broken when  
it is not. Sometimes even to the experienced user. You might want to  
verify that it is not the disk that is bad. Try another CD-Rom or try  
the install cd in another drive. If the drive does seem to be broken  
make sure that the cables going to it are inserted firmly. You can  
verify the power cable by noticing whether the drive makes a sound  
with a disk inserted. The data disk could be loose as well. You have  
to open up the computer to verify that. Be careful those ribbon cables  
can have bent pins, etc. If it is part way in, push it gently but  
firmly to make certain that it is all the way in.

In my case I have several machines so I would try the drive in another  
machine before assuming that it was bad. Actually most machines have  
more than one CD or DVD drives these days so I would use the other  
drive for awhile. :-)
