I have a drawer full of hard drives, taken from retired computers,
etc. So when I saw that there as a cable that would connect a hard
drive, IDE or SATA to a USB cable for only about $20 I sent for it. I
had seen them on several sites, I chose TigerDirect.com I placed the
order yesterday It arrived today. Wow! I tried it out today and it is
very easy to use. Just plug the ribbon cable into the ribbon
connector, the power cable into the power socket on the drive. Then
plug in the as cord of the power supply and the USB connector to the
USB input of the computer.

I started plugging in each of my many IDE drives [I ddn't try the
SATA part because my SATA drives are all in my comcputers. If a drive
is formatted it shows up in My Computer [or on a Mac just showw up on
the desktop. That saves seversl clicks] I had an external drive that
had died.I put the USB cable on that drive and was able to reformat
it and get it working again. But the drive was only 80 G, I replaced
it with a 120 G drive and now I have an extra 120 G external hard
drive with a minimal expenditure. I was also able to confirm that
several drives were no longer funtioning. Having to install them in a
computer to check them out was a lot more work.

And of course this cable plus any hard drive will make a inexpensive
external hard drive. I am reminded of people who back up massive
amounts of data by backing up to hard drive then staring them in the
closet, or off site.
