I'm looking to upgrade my main PC soon. I've decided against any AMD
processor - they just aren't keeping up with Intel price/performance,
and their cpu frequency names (like X2 3600+ MHz) just don't represent
how fast the chip actually performs. So I'm planning on going with an
Intel Core2 Duo. What you buy depends on your budget of course - you
should go for the fastest you can afford. Core2 Duo's run from the
slowest E3400 (1.8Ghz) to the fastest E8600 (3.33Ghz). I think the
E3400's are selling for about $110, and the E8600's are around $270.
These are 2 core chips, so don't compare the frequency numbers with the
older Pentium single core chips - double core chips are fast.
If you've got lots of cash you could go with a Core2 Quad (4 processors
instead of the Duo's 2 cores).
Unless you're a gamer or do a lot of video editing you'll probably find
the E3400 and above will run XP and your apps fine (be sure to get at
least 1GB of RAM too).
The worst thing about Vista in my opinion is the fact that it requires
so much of your PC's horsepower just to operate. If you put Vista on
your existing PC you can expect the PC to run up to 10% slower. So I'm
staying with XP on my gaming machine as long as possible.
Good luck,
Donk
