That's the way all speakers work (at least any I've seen).  When you 
plug the headset in it automatically mutes the speakers - as a convenience.
A simple solution might be a cheap "Y" adapter from Radio Shack (about $5):

*You just plug it into your computer's "line-out" (or speaker) jack, 
then plug your speakers into one side, and your headset into the other.
