You probably deleted a media player program that had CD audio files
associated with it. If you can still hear "any" sounds (like the beeps
and whistles of window's events), then your sound card is ok. If you
can't hear "any" sounds I would check in Device Manager to make sure
your sound card is still listed there, and is said to be "working
properly". Not sure which Windows version you have... but for XP go to
Start, right-click My Computer, choose Properties. Click the Hardware
tab, then click Device Manager. Look for the category called "Sound,
Video, and Game Controllers". You should see an entry marked as "audio
controller" - such as "Via enhanced audio controller". Double click it
and see if its status is "working properly".
If you don't see the controller listed, highlight each other item listed
under that category and choose "remove" or "uninstall". Then reboot and
Windows will automatically reinstall all your audio devices and
abilities. You'll see a message like "Windows has found new hardware
and will install the drivers". Just give it time to finish the
installation.
If your sound card is working ok but you still can't play audio cd's -
you probably just have to re-associate audio CD files with whatever
program you use to listen to audio cd's. What program pops up when you
insert a cd? Look around in that program's menus for "options" or
"preferences". There should be an option to select what types of files
open with that program. Just choose to open audio cd's with that program.
Good luck,
Donk
