Well, first you go to Start, Run, and type msconfig. (For Vista type
msconfig into the search box). Then click the Startup tab. The items
with a checkmark are the ones that are starting each time you boot.

Now go to the website: http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
In the Search box on the website just type the name of one of the
checked items on the startup tab - such as "QTTask".
You'll get one or more results. If more than one, find the one that
exactly matches the name of your startup item, and look at the column
called "Status". You'll see a letter there:
1. if it's a Y, it means that the item should be left checked because it
is needed (usually by Windows).
2. if it's a N, it means you can uncheck the item. It's not important to
have running all the time - and you can start it manually if you ever
want to.
3. if it's a U, it means it is your choice. You have to read the
description of what the item does and decide if you use that particular
application enough to keep it checked. If in doubt - just leave it checked.
4. if it's a X, it means it can definitely be un-checked. It's totally
un-needed. In fact look at the description to see if it may be a virus
or malware.
5. if it's a ?, then I would leave it checked and maybe do a Google
search for it to see what you can find out about it.

Every now and then you'll find an item that gets no results at this
website. If so, just try a Google search for it and you may get some
info that way.
Hope that helps,
Donk
