.aup is a project file created in Audacity. So, you can only open it in Audacity. If you don't have Audacity you can download it - it's totally free, and a very high-end audio editor. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Once you open the .aup file you can just save it as a different format. I don't think Audacity will let you save it as .mp3. Maybe someone else will know for sure. But I'm "sure" Audacity will let you save it as a .wav. Once in wav format you can use a free converter to change it to mp3. Here's a free download that will supposedly work 'with' Audacity to let you save as .mp3's. I've never tried it, but check it out: http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/ Also you can go to Download.com http://www.download.com/windows/ and search for "convert to mp3". Then click the "free license" on the left to sort the results to only free programs.
