Well, I got what I asked for, the path to changing my computer's work group, although the path was much simpler than the article indicated. The actual path in XP was simply System in CPL, i.e. control panel. I used to use this back when I first started networking. Unfortunately changing the work group name did not solve the problem. I more or less suspected that networking does not require that all computers require the same work group name. Right now neither computer can see the other. Actually my original network consisted of my XP machine, my Vista machine and my daughter's XP machine. What I am trying to add is my Compaq laptop also running XP. The Compaq is different from two of the three original machines in that those two are wired network. My daughter's computer is however also wireless as is the laptop. I have tried the laptop with the NIC connected but that did not change anything. As I said earlier, networking is not my long suit. I guess no one cares about guessing about that term 'long suit'. :-) I wish I knew more about networks. I have lots of book computing books, but I'm guessing that networking has changed over the years so that not much of the stuff in those books will work. I guess I'll have to do some Googling. :-) Jim ------------------------------------ If you have any questions or problems with any aspect of this site, please feel free to contact me directly [email protected] Please do not post personal issues directly to the group.
