This might be the way it was designed? Sleep mode (called Standby sometimes) will shut down the screen, drives, keyboard, etc. and go into power saving mode. On some laptops (like my Dell) the keyboard or mouse won't wake the pc, I have to tap on the power button to wake it up. Or, open the lid if it's closed. Look in WIndows Control Panel, Power Options, for various options to set when closing lid, pressing power button, etc.
