Yep, it's a very good idea to keep an "off-site" backup.  Emailing file 
attachments to yourself will certainly work.  But if you've got a lot of 
files (like hundreds of photos, songs, etc), it could take a long time 
to get it all done. Plus all email services have attachment size limits 
- I think Gmail is now limited to 25MB a message.
Some free tools have been created to make backing up your files with 
Gmail very fast and simple.  You can google for "email file backup" to 
see some.  Here's one I've heard about that lets you just drag and drop 
your files into a window, and the they'll automatically be attached to 
emails and sent to your account (instead of having to create an email 
and attach each file):

I've never tried it, but I've heard it works well and is very easy.
