Yeah, apparently you can't upload an entire folder to Skydrive or Google 
Docs yet. (It's planned for the future maybe).
I "think" that the link I sent to the Google Drive Shell Extension app 
will let you do it.  Here's a link directly to it:

But since this is a 3rd party app, you never know if (or when) Google 
might disable it.

You mentioned that you use Carbonite?   I've heard very good things 
about them - they are a "true" online backup service. They will likely 
let you upload folders, drag & drop folders, and even have the option of 
real-time syncing with your computer and your online backup.  So why not 
use them if you've already got an account?

Also - here's a link to another online backup site called Dropbox which 
is very popular.  They offer (I think) 2GB for free, and then charge a 
little more for each additional GB:
