Your messages should still be on the gmail server, right? Anyway, look at this website: http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/tips/gmail/download-gmail.php It has instructions on how to download your Gmail messages into Outlook Express, or Windows Mail, or Windows Live Mail. So, if you have Windows Mail already installed an working properly, I would try downloading you gmail into it.
Also, have you tried uninstalling Outlook, and then reinstalling it? Uninstalling it shouldn't erase your pst files, but best to back them up to the desktop first.
