If the specs I saw are correct:

2 GB RAM - very good

Intel Dual Core Mobile CPU - fine for normal computing and web surfing

160 GB hard drive - not bad unless you've got HUGE amounts of pics or 
music files

So it looks like it would be fine for normal computer stuff - I guess 
the main weakness would be slow, shared graphics - so not really for 
modern games.
I almost always buy my notebook batteries from Ebay sellers.  You can 
get either a generic for around $30, or maybe even a genuine Gateway new 
battery for a little more money.  Just be sure the seller has LOTS of 
positive feedback, and that it's being shipped from the USA (not Hong 
Kong, etc).
The generic batteries are ok, but they don't power as long as an OEM 
battery, plus, after about 12 months they start to need charging more 
often - but for $30 they're a good bargain.
