There are lots of free encryption apps.  TrueCrypt is a very popular one:

It will encrypt your USB thumbdrive data with professional level 
encryption, and let you create a password for it.
I've never used the program, but there's a lotta info about it on their 
website:
http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/

Just don't ever (EVER) forget your password or your data will be gone 
for good.  :-)
