donk, thanks for all the information, i took it to a friend that was able to 
extract the key out the operating system.

You won't know how much MS will charge (if anything) until you ask.  How 
about getting the product key from HP?  Did the laptop come with Win7? 
If so, you rightfully own the license to it.  If you give HP the laptop 
serial number they may give you the key or send you a new Win7 disk. 
Check the computer's manual online to find where the serial number or 
key might be.
