Hi Donk & Group...

A few versions back, Mozilla changed the location for
individual users preferences from the actual program files
to a file under (Username), documents & settings,
application data, Mozilla, Firefox, Profiles,
(somename).default.

I don't recall when this change took place but I suspect
that older profile information may not work with newer
versions of Firefox.

Here is a link to the Firefox FAQ, which covers backups...

http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Backing%20up%20your%20in
formation?s=backups&r=1&as=s

Hope this helps a bit. I remember all the four letter words
I used when I had to restore my Firefox, when my MB failed
and the backup program wouldn't work because of a hardware
change. memo to self...Buy a second motherboard for a spare
to make sure that your backup program works.

Happy New Year All!

Mark

Mozilla's
instructions for backing up profile

I'd have to see the full list of instructions you are using
to
understand what they mean by "go up one level". There are
various ways
to move a profile to a new computer.
The method I use is to just copy the contents of the
"default" profile
folder, and paste them into the "default" profile folder on
the new
computer - overwriting all the files already there.

So you would go to:
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
and open the folder with "default" in the name. Then go to
the Edit
menu, choose "Select All", then go to Edit menu and choose
"Copy".

Now just find the Profiles folder on the new computer, open
the folder
with "default" in the name (it will not have the exact same
name as the
"default" folder on the old pc). Go to the Edit menu and
choose Paste.
A window will appear asking if you are sure you want to
overwrite some
of the files - just say "yes to all".

Now when you open FF it should open with your old bookmarks,
preferences, cookies, etc.

Good luck,
Donk
PS: if you want to post the entire list of instructions you
are trying
to use - or post a link to the website where you got them,
we can try to
explain the method they are using.
