Hi Stacy - Most people set up wireless networks these days. To use wireless your router would have to be capable of wireless, and the computer(s) would have to be capable of wireless, or you could buy a cheap USB wireless adapter for whichever one you want.
But if you really want to go with ethernet cables... I'll recap what you've already said: The modem is the connection to the web - so it would connect to your incoming cable or DSL line or phone line (whatever you've got). Then you run an ethernet cable from the modem to the router. Then an ethernet cable from the router to each PC. If your PC doesn't already have an ethernet port, you can buy either an internal network card which you install yourself, or the easiest way is to buy a USB network interface that you can plug into any USB port. Here's an example of one for $15: http://binged.it/w7x5nY If you prefer going wireless, a wireless router would cost around $30 or less, and each USB net adapter would be about $20. Either way will work fine and you won't really see any difference in transfer speed between wireless or wired - so go with whichever you want.
