Are you sure the smell was from the PC and not the monitor?  You tried 
several vid cards, but maybe the monitor is bad?
Maybe one of the mobo transisters or resisters finally burned out.
I dunno, but 10 years is a lot longer than the normal life expectancy of 
a motherboard. I would just build myself a nice new PC.  You'll prob 
need a lot of new hardware since your old ram, cpu, and vid cards likely 
aren't going to work with a new motherboard. Plus, a 10 year old power 
supply likely won't power a new mobo and vid card. You can keep the hard 
drive and optical drives if you get a mobo that still supports IDE 
devices (which I'm assuming your devices are).
