The fact that the internal mic "sometimes" records - even though it is 
barely audible - might be a clue that the drivers are corrupted. At any 
rate, the first thing I would do would be to go to Device Manager and 
remove (uninstall) the audio drivers for the internal sound chip.  Then 
reboot and let XP re-install them.  Wait until you see the message "your 
device drivers have been installed and your device is now ready to use" 
(or similar).
There shouldn't be a problem having 2 mics installed - I switch between 
mine all the time.
