Hi again. Due to a problem that I discovered that caused a couple of
ABC sites to 'disappear" recently, I've made a few modifications to
how my ABC searcher talks to web servers. I ran a little program that
shows the current totals for each machine, and also the changes since
the last run on Aug 7. You might check any machine that you know
about and see if the numbers look reasonable. I'm not sure that my
program is successfully reading all the files that it should.
There were actually two distinct problems, with Mac Webstar servers
and Microsoft IIS servers. The Mac problems are the usual, caused by
the non-standard line separators, and exacerbated (great word) by the
fact that Mac web servers send a jumbled mixture of different styles
of line separators, standard for the first few (header) lines and
then nonstandard for the rest. Algorithms to decode such jumbles can
get a bit tricky. And the fact that WebStar doesn't seem to close the
TCP connection at EOF doesn't help much, either.
The IIS problem is nastier: I learned some time back that some of
them return error 404 (not found) for HTTP/1.0 requests, and only
talk to clients who send HTTP1.1 requests. OK, I thought; I'll just
send HTTP/1.1 requests to everyone. Well, I've found a couple of IIS
servers that reject these, and only respond to HTTP/1.0 requests. And
some of these are sites that have ABC files. Grrr .... Anyway, I
added a kludge to note and remember which HTTP version a server
requires. Several hundred tunes reappeared as a result. But I
probably don't have it quite right yet for all servers. So if anyone
can spot any machines for which the numbers are wrong, I'd like to
know about it.
Apple and Microsoft sure like to make life difficult. Standards? *We*
define the standards, not some silly industry-wide, government funded
committee of pointy-headed academics ...
For each machine, the first row of numbers shows the most recent
counts, and the second row is the change since a week ago. It's
interesting that a number of sites had a decrease in the number of
files but no change or an increase in tunes or titles. This is
probably not wrong; it just means that files were consolidated. A few
spot check verified this. OTOH, my own count decreased because I
deleted a number of large multi-tune files to save disk space. The
fact that the total tune (X:) count increased more than the total
title (T:) count is curious.
It's also curious that there are still no tunes at www.gre.ac.uk ;-)
