It is expressed in standard notation; my copies of Frescobaldi's Ricercare in Modo Dorico and Schubert's Symphony no.8 in B minor express it right on the title page. "Standard printed music notation" includes whatever explanatory text the composer or editor thinks is necessary, helpful or fun.
