Another data point -- when I was first asking newbie questions on this
list a couple of years ago, I got into an off list discussion with
Steve Allen which used words like M4 preprocessor and Makefile, so he
suggested that I join the developers' list, and mailed the maintainer,
and the mail bounced then.
