The numbers would be dependent on the local character set, and would
introduce non-ascii, 8-bit characters that will probably cause problems
with mail relays similiar to the line-end nuisance. The Tex-style ones
ought to be system independent, but I'm not sure that all progs implement
all of them, and anyway it's not a "complete" set of symbols.  I wonder if
we're going to have to bite the bullet-symbol and find something to do
about this ?
