Phil Taylor notes that the standard has: > Duplets, triplets, quadruplets, etc. > ==================================== > > (2 2 notes in the time of 3 > (3 3 notes in the time of 2 > (4 4 notes in the time of 3 > (5 5 notes in the time of n > (6 6 notes in the time of 2 > (7 7 notes in the time of n > (8 8 notes in the time of 3 > (9 9 notes in the time of n > >If the time signature is compound (3/8, 6/8, 9/8, 3/4, etc.) then >n is three, otherwise n is two. There is a minor error here. 3/4 shouldn't be in the list of compound meters. The rule should read: If the time signature is compound (3/8, 6/8, 9/8, 12/8 etc.) then n is three, otherwise n is two. (3/4 is not a compound meter; a quintuplet of eighth-notes in a waltz counts as one beat, not as a dotted eighth. Someone should probably fix this. I may have been responsible for this typo, ultimately. Sorry. ) Robert Bley-Vroman Honolulu To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
