Actually, when I use the abc2mtex/MusixTeX route, I use pdfTeX which
directly produces pdf.

The problem is that MusixTeX use METAFONT fonts, so the resulting PDF is
fine to print but not so to watch on Acrobat Reader.

abc2ps doesn't use fonts for the music. It uses PostScript drawings for the
music and calls to the classic PS fonts for text. So, PDF from the
abc2ps->ps2pdf route are perfect (and of smaller size too).

You can count me in the people interested in that beast! Thanks for
considering it.

As Laura said, its use would be mainly for short (less than one page) tunes
but it would give all The LaTeX formatting power for tunebook preparation.
