You assume wrong. I haven't ever managed to install M-Tx.

In LINUX the install instructions seem quite clear about what to copy
where, but when I do that it doesn't work. I forget the details.

I agree that if I spent as much time fiddling with the M-Tx install as
I have with Lilypond installation, I would probably have managed to
get a working install. However, I think the problem of how to install
software on LINUX is a well-understood one, so if nobody's bothered to
make a standard installation script, you have to assume that they
don't care about getting lots of LINUX users.
The reason I worked harder on lilypond than I did on M-Tx is that from
what I've read, the design philosophy of lilypond is targeted to
(eventually) produce the design I want, which is that the software
knows how to get high-quality typesetting without user input into
strictly typesetting decisions (as opposed to input of musical
information). As I understand it MusiXTeX (and by extension, the
preprocessors and the preprocessors to the preprocessors) is designed
to allow the users to have complete control over all typesetting
decisions, but not necessarily to make particularly good ones on its
own.
