So, I put a lot of music to the net which is in a way "public domain"
because it is material from public folk music archives. The problem is
that these archives allow publishing for free but only if the archive is
mentioned in the publication together with the music. So when someone
copies an abc file and removes the sometimes extensive notes about the
source in the header of the tune or at the beginning of the file this is
a violation of the rules which permit the free accsess to the archives.
At the long term this may cause a change in the open policy of these
archives, and cause a negative attitude against the internet.
Second, the material from these archives is all traditional and it is
illegal to put this music material under copyright. If the information
about the origin of the music material gets lost, it may happen that
someone tries, intended or by error, to put copyright on this music.
Again in the long run this may cause a more repressive policy by these
archives to prevent such illegal copyrighting.
So: Allways make propper copyright and source notes to any abc you post
and never remove such information from a tune header.
