I think the fact that you can't see the difference is the problem.

Well, it's a bit late now. Even if it was withdrawn from the software, there
are still a lot of tunes out there that use it. It looks like a perfect
example of what I'm talking about and just the sort of process you advocate.
Jim saw a need and came up with a solution that wasn't explicitly banned by
the standard. He implemented it without, as far as I know, discussing it
with anyone else. His users liked it and made use of it. What's your
problem? Some people don't like it, but tough. It is the point I've been
trying to make that once an extension is released into the public domain it
is very difficult to take it out again so it should always be done with
thought and care.
