--------

Actually, this is something that I've thought about, and I've been
working on some ideas in the experimental version of the Tune Finder.
The current public version has a primitive control for this, but by
default it has been set up to return just the music. The newer
version will have a way to explicitly control whether you get all the
header info or just the music.

However, I can do something simple in the meantime: I just changed
the way that the tune is converted, which is done by abc2ps. I added
the -n option, so that all the header information is now printed.
This will make the output wordier, and I expect some people will
complain. But it may help with your problem. Try it and see if it's
acceptable. If it is, I'll leave it this way, and ignore complaints
from people who don't want all this extra stuff..

Note that, when you use the ABC link to get the tune, it has always
sent the entire tune, including all the header info. So at least the
info is preserved in the ABC.

| just now I tried arround with Johns your tune-finder, because I wanted
| to recomend it to some german folk-mailing list.
|
| And I found that there is a problem that from my point is very serious:
| Much of the music on my site is from traditional music archives and can
| be used for free, is without any copyright troubles beside that it must
| be distributed only with its original source, the archive in question,
| usually content of the S: field in my tune headers. Sometimes there is
| no S: field, since my source is a publication by those archives and so
| the content is in the B: field.
|
| In the GIF's PNG's PDF and I supose also in the EPS and PS files which
| the tunefinder supports, neither the B: nor the S: field contents are
| included. So the crucial information is not passed on, especially if
| someone does a printout.
|
| In my PS printouts I substitute the "B:" and "S:" with "C:book:" and
| C:source"
|
| I am not sure what to do now. I do not want to remove the files, but
| there must be a change in the way they appear in the public. Maybe it
| works to replace all "B:" and "S:" with "C:book:" and C:source:", but I
| also do not know whether multiple C: fields are commonly supported.
|
| I write this to the mailing list and not directly to John since I am
| sure the tune-finder is not the only troublemaker.
|
| I also belive strongly that in our discussions on
| copyright-composers/rights dealing with traditional music must also mean
| discussion on maintaining the sources.
|
| One first attempt could be to support the original URL and, if given in
| the abc tune header, mail adress with every printout and whith every
| copying from file to file, but print tends to be passed on to non
| netties so a real support of the "B:" and "S:" contents is needed.
