Maybe, but as Laura pointed out, this wasn't the way it was done originally.

But anyways, it seems to me that abc should allow for both alternatives.
According to Laura, abcselect is able to convert between the two
alternatives, and the latest version of BarFly is able to do a one-way
conversion (how about running that both ways, Phil?) so it shouldn't
really be too much of a problem(?)
