Muse takes the approach that an initial repeat sign is a good idea.  It
counts repeats (+1 for |:, -1 for :|) and if the count ever goes negative
then it looks for a place to add a begin-repeat to the tadpoles.  Usually
that's the beginning of the tune, but it uses a heuristic rather like
Barfly.  It will also attempt to fix a missing :|

Hmmm :-/

This certainly suggests that there is a compelling reason for abc
to require a |: at the beginning of a tune (if the first notes are
to be repeated) even if the printed source omits it. I must admit
I'm at a loss as to what this reason is. Why shouldn't abc assume
that if it can't find a |: before a :| it repeats from the
beginning, as Beethoven's orchestras did?
