please let me advocate JedABC, a mode that extends the Jed editor;
http://abcplus.sourceforge.net/#JedABC.

I'm strongly tempted to say it's one of the nicest tools for writing ABC
sources. You get the best of Emacs, plus lots of other features. If you
happen to have a spare Windows or Linux machine, give it a try.
