This isn't completely true. The printer driver informs the software of the proper size rectangle that it can print, but it may not be centered properly on the page. Thus when you set on-screen margins at, say, half an inch on each side of the page, you might find your printed page with a 3/8 inch margin on the left and a 5/8 inch margin on the right.
