It's done occasionally in modern-day music typesetting, usually when a bar has so many notes that forcing the line breaks to correspond to bar lines would result in one or more lines being either too spread out or too cramped to be easily readable by the player. When a line break occurs other than at a bar line, there is, of course, no bar line at the end of the staff. I'd suggest that abc-related software should allow a line break in the middle of a bar if the abc specifies it, but should never automatically break a line in the middle of a bar.
