Maybe we could get a tally of the different numering schemes that people like (or dislike ;-). One I've seen in a lot of dance music gives multiple bar numbers for repeats, as: 1,9 2,10 3,11 4,12 5,13 6,14 7,14 8 16 |: | | | | | | |1 :|2 || 17,25 |: ... This is very useful for people writing out dance descriptions. For example, in a 32-bar dance, you can use bar numbers 1-32 in the description, and the corresponding musical bars are completely unambiguous. As a programmer, I'd be a bit hesitant to try to implement this. It would require a significant chunk of code to get it right. But as a regular dance musician (playing for Scottish this evening), I sure would find it useful. People other than dancers would probably consider this too "busy". It's definitely more than what you need if you're a conductor who just wants to tell musicians which bar to start in. OTOH, it does neatly solve the problem of scores in which the repeats are written out diferently in different parts. Orchestral scores typically don't have bar numbers at all, just huge boxed letters at critical points. People then say things like "Go to four bars before "E".
