Midi in java is part of the java 1.3.1 standard release.  Start
at
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/guide/sound/index.html

for information.  I found the docs to be a little difficult to 
figure out, but the javadoc api spec is all there and there are
some decent sample programs to play with.

Skink uses Java sound to do all its playback - I'm currently
trying to figure out how to do tempo properly...
