This is older notation and is frowned upon today. The standard practice
for at least 50 years has been to write the notes as normal beams, and
slur the notes for melismas. This is recommended in all my notation
books. However there is a very modern (?5 years) movement NOT to slur
melismas, which as a singer I deplore.
