Funny you should mention Finale ....
I downloaded their 2005 Notepad program. It seems to do a lot of what I want, but one very irritating feature is that there doesn't seem to be an escape key (for Sibelius and a few others, if you it the ESC key (several times to many, many with Sibelius!!) it "let's go" of whatever mode its's in). Without this, you have to go back and start over a lot.
