You're confusing document formats with programming languages.  AbiWord is
using an XML-based document format for storing documents created in
AbiWord.  AbiWord itself is being developed in C++.  

We considered using Java, but most of us here have worked in Java on a
large project over the past year, and its still not really ready for prime
time.  The GUIs it produces look clunky and its not nearly as
cross-platform as all the hype suggests.  Its also not exactly embraced by
the OpenSource community yet.
