Looking more closely at the error messages, it looked like the compiler
(for some reason) was mis-casting the lines in question. I cast them
myself, and it compiled!
After fiddling with my LD_LIBRARY_PATH, I was able to get AbiWord
to fire up (in a strangely blank-looking window, is that normal?)
and accept some text. When I tried to "Save As," it said:

I'll play some more tomorrow, but it's WAY past bedtime here....
