(hopefully) improved editing behavior in and around format changes. this primarily affects how we select which character properties to apply to newly entered text from the immediately surrounding text and around paragraph breaks. this closes #401, but leaves #397 and #405. hopefully, the net effect is a much smoother experience with fewer quirks than before (and than before last week's mess-o-changes). please, if you have a chance, give it a try and see what you think. i don't care if it "doesn't exactly match key-for-key some high-priced application....", but only that it works in a nice and logical manner (and without crashing :-) jeff
