This is sorta stop gap, but here's how I did it for Debian...

I renamed the binary from AbiWord to abiword.bin and created the following
script:

#!/bin/sh
ABIWORD_FONTPATH=/usr/share/abiword
export ABIWORD_FONTPATH 
xset +fp /usr/share/abiword
xset fp rehash
/usr/bin/abiword.bin
xset -fp /usr/share/abiword
xset fp rehash

Obviously, I don't need the ABIWORD_FONTPATH any longer... I'm taking it
out with 5.3 so pay attention to the xset idea...
