Ok... putting code where my mouth is.  

This patch, when applied to the spell directory will allow my Linux system
to read native Debian american.hash (64 bit masks) and the american.hash
from abi...

I really hacked makedent.c... removing a number of functions that Abi
wasn't using.  If they're needed, I can put them back... They seem to be
used in the creation of hash files.

This is kinda what I was thinking when I asked about what we can do for
"dynamic hash figuring-it-out-ness"....  These will work on the three
hashes I have access to... I don't know about any others...
