I had assumed so far that in American English, the double quotes were
The Usual ones, but nested quotes were singles (further nesting just
alternates double, single, ....), whereas for UK English and likely
some other variants, single quotes were The Usual ones, but the
nesting still worked by alternating. In other words, the two variants
just start with different quote parity. Is that your understanding?
