Detachable menus and different toolbars should be observable
differences.

If you are not seeing them, did you remember to:

$ make ABI_OPT_GNOME=1
# make ABI_OPT_GNOME=1 install

?  If you don't include the ABI_OPT_GNOME=1 bit in the make
install command, the build system will go and build you a
plain Gtk+ version and install nice.
