 There are no fixes for this problem in CVS yet.

 I traced the problem.
 It appears only when iconv from glibc is used (just compiled with iconv from
glibc and AW crashes on startup). Very funny. May be this is fixed in
glibc-2.2?

 I will post a fix ("workaround") in next 5 hours.
