Here are two current problems with fields (and I don't think either of
them are related to the underlying implementation).
1 - If you insert a field (with, say, the insert field dialog) the cursor
is positioned *before* the field, but if you type, the text goes *after*
the field. This is just an issue of where we draw the cursor.
2 - The contents of the field only update when you type (or do something
else, like zoom). This is only a problem with the 'current time' field,
but the time just sits there if you do.
