Character widths aren't the same on printing as on screen

I've been bothered by this for several releases. I write an invoice with
AbiWord, and when I print it the tabs don't line up. I have since put explicit
tab stops to fix that, but here's a file I wrote to test it. Print it to a
printer, or to a file and view with ghostview, and you'll see it doesn't line
up. What's the fix?

I am using AbiWord 0.7.8 on Linux-Mandrake 5.3.
