 Agreed.

 I want to point out LyX - seems we can borrow algorithms and code from there
when time comes.

 Also, when I was browsing gnome cvs a week ago, I found equation editor
component - called geqnedit. It's unstable and unfinished yet, but we should
keep it in mind too.
