 Very strange.. I repeat that I tested your document and got u with dieresis 
 instead of small circle everywhere (no small circles at all).

 I don't think that it's iconv byte order problem...
 What is your $LANG and $LC_ALL set to or what is your native charset? Most
 probably it's ISO8859-1.
